Love (2019)

This collaborative performance piece was created as part of Haramacy, a multi-arts festival under the COMMUN residency programme.

Curated by Zahed Sultan

Venue: The Albany Theatre, London

Performance Collaborators: Moza Almatrooshi & Nouf Alhimiary

This performance emerged from a four-day collaborative residency with the COMMUN program, culminating in the multi-arts festival Haramacy at the Albany Theatre. The festival’s ethos of cross-cultural engagement and intersectional exploration strongly aligned with my own practice, providing a space to reflect on identity, community, and emotional experience.

The work took the form of a 12 minute, three-part performance guided by a soundscape composed of three voice notes, two in Arabic and one in English. Each recording expressed a distinct tone and emotional state associated with love, which shaped both the musical composition and the movement within the piece.

Developed collaboratively with a sound technician and supported by a live band, the soundscape combined recorded and live elements to create a shifting auditory landscape. The performers’ movements responded to the changing rhythms and moods of the voices, translating the nuances of language and emotion into embodied form.

The piece explored how love and intimacy are expressed and understood across cultural and linguistic boundaries, and how sound and movement can serve as a bridge between personal and collective experience.
